Workshops for kids

Sara runs a variety of workshops for kids. The aim is to develop an enhanced awareness of the potential of natural materials as the source for creative expression whilst also connecting (re-connecting?) with the environment. Nature has always been a source of inspiration for man, these workshops use natural materials as the source of creative play, with natural structures informing the visual decision making.

Pebble Maze workshops

Using pebbles supplied by Sara, these pre schoolers took part in creating a pebble maze. This large scale drawing was initially laid out in chalk lines, which were then covered by the placed stones. This process was then followed up by walking the maze to the sound of a live flute.

Pod workshops

These pods were created by children at Monkleigh Primary School using natural materials that Sara had collected. The willow hoops and uprights form the armature of the structures then long leaves and reeds were used to flesh out the body and a muddy mixture of clay and earth was then smeared on the top. The children were asked to create small treasures to insert into their 3D pod form. All of the work is designed to be left outside, but I recommend that the work be documented photographically in order that the children can have a record of their creativity.

Earth Drawings

Using different coloured of soil, Yeoford Primary School made large scale images of dream animals in the school grounds. This led to a discussion about the minerals in the earth locally and a greater awareness of the changing ground beneath their feet.

Shell shrine shell mine

This package is one where some collection of materials are made on site on the day and some are brought in having been collected previously by participants. We explore a few ideas and construction techniques that can be employed to good effect. Children and family groups find a site their work.Three dimensional sketches are then made. At the end of the workshop the makers tell their story of how their piece/installation came into being.
